Welcome Back to a New Academic Year at Larwood!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we kick off the new school year, I want to extend a warm welcome to all of our returning families and those joining Larwood for the first time. With all our pupils now on roll, it’s been incredible to see how well everyone has settled in and the fantastic energy that’s filling our classrooms and playgrounds.

The first half of the term has been nothing short of amazing! Our students have been actively engaged in a variety of enriching activities—from our thrilling pantomime to energetic djembe drumming sessions, forest school adventures, and some inspiring work in PE. It’s been wonderful to see everyone’s hard work and enthusiasm in every corner of the school.

Looking ahead, there’s much to anticipate this half term! Mrs Longcroft and the children are putting in great effort for our annual Christmas production, which will be held at 2 p.m. on December 12th—we look forward to seeing many of you there! Additionally, we’ll be supporting Children in Need on November 15th, a day that always brings joy and unity to our school community.

This year, we are also working toward achieving the “Super Kind” Award, an initiative led by Mrs. MacGuinness, which reinforces our commitment to kindness and respect across the school. We were delighted to see everyone come together this week for the “Four Parks Clean-Up,” a fantastic example of our pupils’ dedication to their community.

In even more exciting news, Larwood is expanding our reach through a new satellite provision called Pathways, which will support students across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Bayliss, Miss Boulton, and Mrs. McCLean to our Larwood team to lead this project.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way, and we look forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Best wishes,

    Jumping into a Virtual Reality!

As part of Science week at Larwood School, we all had the opportunity to experience virtual reality. With the help of Gareth P from SharkIT,  pupils and staff were immersed into underwater scenes with a huge Whale, stepping out of a lift and onto a thin plank, being in charge of a jet, back pack and flying to high rise buildings, visiting a museum, riding a roller coaster, as well as taking a trip in the Millennium Falcon! We have used the experience with pupils to encourage some more quality writing and it certainly worked.

I wonder if we will ever see the day when all aspects of education will be delivered by virtual reality? I hope not!

    Pancake madness!

I am sure you will enjoy the great pictures of our pancake day on Tuesday. Not only did staff and pupils cook together, and then had the finished items judged by our discerning cooks, we also had relay races. On the very same day, we had our governing body in school to visit classes and help to plan our vision for the next 3-5 years. Just to keep us really busy, we were informed on Tuesday morning that Ofsted were coming to inspect our residential provision! The full inspection was led by Trish Palmer and she thanked all staff, pupils and parents for their help and support during the three day process. Capping off the week, it was great to see so many pupils and staff ‘dressed to impress’ on World Book Day.

It’s about this time of the year when I start to wonder where the beginning of the year has gone so quickly.  Larwood School always has something going on!

    • So far this year we have taken delivery of some new sensory equipment and have started to complete Sensory Profiles related to some of our pupils. This should really help with some of the specific sensory needs that we know some children have.
    • Our pupils have attended a cricket event within Stevenage and a mini Olympics and, as usual, they did us all proud!
    • We are about to launch a new way of sharing and reviewing written work called ‘Pobble’, and you have all been sent letters related to this. Please support us this new venture as we believe it will really help to improve work in lots of ways.
    • After school clubs continue to be a great success with our residential pupils and day pupils combining and enjoying a range of activities.

Finally, during Friday’s assembly, every class teacher mentioned at least one pupil in their class for acts of kindness that had been seen during the week. Some were mentioned for their kindness that had been consistently applied for a number of weeks. A great way to end the week!

Welcome back and happy New Year! Great start to the term with lots of really high points scores, and positive attitudes for 2017. The first assembly of the year will take place on Monday 9th Jan and will focus on interesting facts about the number-2017, as well as what pupils may choose to work on and change during the rest of the year.

It’s that time of the year! Play rehearsals in full swing, a Christmas tree has appeared, end of term trips being organised, assessments being written and lots of annoying coughs, colds and bugs flying around! It’s almost the end of term! Patience is a key virtue that we try and instil and model for all our pupils and I have seen this in abundance from staff this week. Mrs Osobu has certainly modelled this during the numerous play rehearsals, as have a number of staff supporting the activity! The residential team have been working hard with our boarders improving their social skills, and class teams continue to encourage pupils to try and meet their targets and to keep trying even when the going gets tough. It reminds of that song on the telly-‘it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas...’

Writing this ‘blog’ at 7:15am on a cold and dark Friday morning, I think most people would expect the task to be challenging, with regards to trying to find a warm and bright theme! However, we had parents evening last night and it was a great pleasure to see many of you here. It is always nice to see you at such events and your support is critical to our work with your children. Last night we focussed on the ‘core’ subjects of English, Maths and Science. Books were examined and I believe many of you were quite shocked at how much quality work your son/daughter had produced! This was particularly evident in English and the work completed related to various topics including The Big Idea. Long may it continue and my thanks to staff who work so tirelessly every day to help this happen. It seems parents evening may have been good timing for many of our pupils and those ‘brownie points’ that help with that letter to Father Christmas!

A busy week has passed and another one is about to take place! It was wonderful to be invited to Miss Kimpton’s classroom last week and see homework projects, based on models representing scenes from World War II. Lots of time, effort and thought went into these and all of the class should be proud of their efforts. The week finished with a Children in Need fundraiser, with staff and pupils in their PJ’s, along with a bake sale. There was also something called the Mannequin Challenge!

Finally, I know that out boarding pupils have been creating and sending out invitations to day staff to join them for an activity. I was lucky enough to receive one so looking forward to an activity in boarding soon.

At the start of this week we welcomed Professor Pango Mango-a very funny poet. Assemblies and class sessions ran during Monday and I have already seen the results of his ideas with pupils. Well done Josh, Levi and Alfie for your work.

Exciting times at Larwood School! Our new website is now up and running and I hope you agree it looks great! Any feedback and ideas would be welcome.

Our new website has coincided with us becoming an Academy School. Therefore Larwood School is now an Academy as part of Larwood Academy Trust. As I have already stated your children won't notice the difference in the short term, but hopefully some of the freedoms we now have will help all of pupils in the long term.

Finally, our most important news-how your children are making progress having come back after half term. Some fantastic points this week and an amazing performance from our newly formed rugby team. Mr V mentioned them all in assembly this week and many gained certificates for determination, passion, self belief, honesty, respect and teamwork. All of which are values that we promote as a school. They also managed to gain fourth place in competition with over twenty other mainstream schools.  All in all, a great start to the second half of the autumn term.
